FM
TV series | Comedy | UK | 2009
FM is a British sitcom about two deejays and a producer of Skin 86.5 FM, a fictional radio station. Now and then, real-life artists and celebrities from the UK music industry made an appearance during the show. The 6 episode series was broadcast on ITV2 in 2009. ITV Studios was asking record companies and radio stations for help to produce a second series, but so far there hasn’t been a sequel. See this show
FM
Movie | Comedy | USA | 1978
At the fictional rock ‘n roll station Q-SKY in Los Angeles, the jocks do (and play) whatever they want. This non-format format (not even Jack FM comes close) is surprisingly successful. But when the sales department forces them to play more commercials and less music, the jocks revolt. FM features cameo’s by Tom Petty and REO Speedwagon, and music of Steely Dan and Queen, to name a few. See this movie | Listen the soundtrack
Frasier
TV series | Comedy | USA | 1993-2004
The popular American sitcom Frasier, a spin-off of Cheers, lasted for eleven successful seasons. Dr. Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) is a popular radio talk show host on KACL-AM in Seattle (fictional station). He is assisted by his attractive but unconventional female producer Roz Doyle. All phone-ins during the show were done by real-life celebrities, who’s names were revealed in the end credits of each season’s finale. See this show
Midnight Caller
TV series | Detective | USA | 1988-1991
“Good night America… wherever you are.” Famous last words at the end of every episode of one of my favorite TV series! Former San Fransisco cop Jack Killian (Gary Cole) now rules the air as The Nighthawk on KJCM-FM. He takes calls from listeners and solves their problems during the day, using his detective skills. Midnight Caller was created when the Talk Radio format began to boom in the US. Get release notification
NewsRadio
TV series | Comedy | USA | 1995-1999
There are several American comedies about radio. NewsRadio is about WNYX-AM, a New York City radio station with an eccentric owner and a staff that is using the studio as a dating agency. Gaining control over this wacky team is a challenge for young news director Dave Nelson (Dave Foley). NewsRadio is full of smart dialogues and bizar storylines, like characters that find themselves in outer space or on the Titanic. See this show
Pirate Radio a.k.a. The Boat That Rocked
Movie | Comedy | UK | 2009
Pirate Radio, a re-edit of The Boat That Rocked (Blu-ray), is inspired by the UK pirate radio history from the 1960s. While the highbrow BBC rather plays jazz and classical music, Radio Rock Revolution hits the air with pure rock ‘n roll from a ship in the North Sea but p*sses off the establishment. In the soundtrack we hear songs by The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix and The Who. See this movie (Blu-ray) | Listen the soundtrack
Private Parts
Movie | Comedy | USA | 1997
“You are the m*therf*cking antichrist!” shouts “W-ehnnnN-B-C” program director “Pig Vomit” towards Howard Stern in another memorable Private Parts scene. In this must-see radio movie, Stern clashes with old school PDs that want to squeeze him into tight formats. He finally becomes New York’s #1 DJ by releasing his mental brakes, staying loyal to himself, and assembling the right team of sidekicks and producers. See this movie | Listen the soundtrack
Radio Days
Movie | Comedy | USA | 1987
Director Woody Allen tells the story of how radio influenced his childhood in New York City in the late 1930s and early 40s. Radio was a theatre of mind and offered an escape from reality. Sometimes fiction was even perceived as reality – Allen remembers the famous broadcast of The War of the Worlds by Orson Welles in 1939. A tribute to the Golden Age of Radio, full of nostalgic music from the years before TV. See this movie | Listen the soundtrack
Straight Talk
Movie | Comedy | USA | 1992
Country girl Shirlee Kenyon (Dolly Parton) is hired as a radio host by lucky mistake. She’s a natural talent and ‘Dr. Shirlee’ becomes a popular talk show on WNDY Chicago. But the fact that she’s not a real clinical psychologist, as the management demands her to pretend, causes problems. Straight Talk is not a masterpiece (one critic wrote: Parton Gets Hung Up in Phony Talk), but still a feelgood radio film. See this movie (Blu-ray) | Listen the soundtrack
Talk Radio
Movie | Drama | USA | 1988
Barry Champlain (Eric Bogosian) is a shock radio personality in Dallas, Texas who has controversial political views. Some callers threaten him on air, and his Jewish background makes him a target of radical groups. The script of this Oliver Stone movie is based on what happened to radio host Alan Berg back in 1984. Tom Leykis (back then on KFI in Los Angeles) was a model for Bogosian’s radio presenter role. See this movie | Listen the soundtrack
Talk To Me
Movie | Drama | USA | 2007
Through talent and persistence, quick-witted ex-convict Ralph ‘Petey’ Greene (Don Cheadle) becomes a radio & TV star in Washington, D.C. in the 1960s. When riots break loose after the death of civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Greene successfully calls on listeners to stop the violence. Talk To Me refers to singer James Brown, Motown founder Berry Gordy, actor Sidney Poitier, and TV legend Johnny Carson. See this movie | Listen the soundtrack
WKRP In Cincinnati
TV series | Comedy | USA | 1978-1982
Cincinnati, Ohio station WKRP has more employees than listeners, despite crazy publicity stunts – such as dropping turkeys out of a helicopter above a shopping mall, as a Thanksgiving Day present. It was one of the first series that featured music from major bands and artists, like The Stones and Elvis Presley. Unfortunately, much of the original soundtrack has been cut from the DVD release because of the expensive licensing. See this show (first season)
